Old Japan – Traditions, Festivals & Rituals – November

Bird-day Fair

The Tori no Ichi Fair is a famous annual open-air market held in November on the day of the Tori (Rooster) in the Chinese calendar and this event has taken place since the Edo period up until today.

It is held at the Otori Shrine in Asakusa,  adjacent to what was the Shin-Yoshiwara ‘pleasure quarter’.

Visitors like to buy highly decorated bamboo rakes (kumade) which are believed to rake in good luck.
